    1. Do not forget that karate-do begins and ends with rei

'Rei' is about total respect, but more than that.  It is about respect from the heart, rather than feigned respect.  It is more than that too, but it will suffice as an explanation for the purposes of this forum.

And without wishing to set off anyone, it is also the begiining of Rei-Ki. Yes, respect, but so much more. We do not have a word for it (that I know of)

You won't start me off

It seems to me that it would do a lot of people good to practise martial arts.  Respect for fellow man seems to be lacking completely these days.

I would imagine that this includes learning self respect too.

'Rei-ki' would be respecting spirit, or the respect of the spirit within

Seems to me that discipline is lacking...pehaps that fosters self-respect?

    2. There is no first strike in karate

'bu' - Martial (as in 'Budo' - the martial way)

This is made up of:

Stop (tomaru)

And 'spear' (couldn't find an image for that).

Thus 'bu' or martial, is made up of the images for 'stop spear'

This is the second guiding principle of karate.

When people hear of someone having achieved black belt, one of the things they say is 'best not upset you then', the truth of it is they are probably much much safer in the presence of a black belt than they would be in someone elses presence.

The japanese kanji system of writing is basically pictures of what it represents.  For example, the kanji for 'tree' is a picture of a tree, let me see if I can find an example:

See the trunk and branches?

So the japanese system for 'martial' is actually 'stop spear' in other words their word for 'war' is 'peace'.

I know it's complicated, but once you think about it, it makes some sense

    3. Karate stands on the side of justice.

When I examine myself and see that I am in the right, then whether I am faced by one thousand or ten thousand opponents, I must press onward.

Karate practitioners must stand on the side of justice at all times.

This is a bit of a tough call.

How many people would have the courage, and patience to stand up and be counted at every turn of the coin.

It could be life threatening too, so I would guess that there is another rule coming up that says that you must preserve life.

Also you need to know what is just and unjust.

Tricky.

Exactly, which is where the examining oneself comes in ;)

It seems to me that Martial Arts, and Tantra, have an awful lot in common.

They both strip away the ego a bit at a time, and both seem to be methods of finding simple truths that we humans make all too complicated.

In fighting there is no room for thought just being.

This is what Tantra teaches.
