A friend of mine was just robbed  of 60,000 pounds.

Tied up and beaten with a golf club.  Brocken ribs punctured lung etc.

He doesn't walk very well at the moment and is as shadow oh his former self.

He doesn't seem a lot stronger to me.

Some time I think we can romantacise things that are not very romantic .

Yes, and belittle the real problems that people face and suffer through

I wish him a speedy recovery David what a terrible ordeal

Pain from training within martial arts and pain from being robbed are two different things.  It is unwise, and quite rude, to mix the two.

I know, and also know that your here on Fridays, and was hoping for a little more detail of the benifits of pain.

Is it the overcoming of pain that strengthens, the body, or mind.

Is it essential in training?

Is it like shamanistic pain to gain an altered state?

Am I asking too many questions

I didn't intend to be rude at all, I actually find when people are in great need or in great pain people say these same things (that which does not kill us makes us stronger etc..) to them and I feel it rude towards the person who is suffering.... it really does belittle their experiences.

As far as martial arts is concerned my knowledge is limited to none at all I am ignorant in this area to the extreme. I apologise if I came across rude it was not my intention. I will take what is said in these threads as totally related to martial arts then. not my life ??? Is that what you are asking or suggesting Bravo

Don't be told what to think by anybody.

Just free your mind and think what you want to think.

If you want to, that is.

"what don't kill you can only make you stronger"

Load of tosh! If it don't kill you how in the heck can it make you stronger? you get stabbed, you survive, does your body flesh get stronger? no, skin is skin, and the knife causes pain before you guys try and catch me out, a thank you.

Pain is what pain does, just cos you're in pain, doesn't mean next time your in pain will hurt less, cos no 2 pains are the same, correct? so, if it don't kill you, and it's not the same pain twice, how does it also make you stronger?

Ahhhh my twisted logic is getting away from me again!

When a bone breaks, by the time your body has healed it, it is twice as strong as it was before the break.

When you get stabbed, you could feel sorry for yourself for twenty years or more.  You could overcome the sorrow, you could decide that the person that stabbed you does not deserve you to lose your mental strength.  You could decide that you will get yourself through the barrier.  You could decide that no-one or no thing can stop you now.  You could be better physically, mentally, emotionally.

You could gain new found strength within yourself and learn to draw strength from weakness and find your internal power.

You could do that.

Or you could choose to let the person who attacked you beat you and remain a shell forever.

I know which I choose.

This is the crux of the matter I feel.  Gaining respect for the self from the self.

I used to disslike the idea of teaching young kids martial atrs and that was because I was ignorant and new a martial artist who simply enjoyed hurting people.

Then I started playing rugby which I know is not a martial art, but the nearest I can get to it.

I found that there was always someone bigger faster stronger and better that I was.  I still had to try to bring them down though.

What I learned from that was to respect my fellow man and not to underestimate anyone.

If kids can learn that from martial arts, then lets have it taught in schools.

With the guy that got attacked, yes it is terrible that he got attacked, but there is nothing anyone on the planet can do to change it.  What he can change is where he goes from here...he has the power to do that, it is entirely his choice.

He is weaker now, but I think he may yet be stronger given time.  I really hope he does.

Yes David you are right, humility is a big part of martial arts.
