Last nights visit to Camp Bling opposite Priory Park in Southend on Sea Essex proved to be very interesting. Camp Bling has been set up by people who are opposed to the widening of an existing road that would take it over one of the most important Saxon burial sites to be discovered in the UK. Some time ago and before the Camp Bling episode had begun I was meditating with a small group and I found myself in Priory Park at the site of the old ruined monastery. Standing facing what was to become The protest site stood a guard. He was holding a spear and as I am well used to seeing such thing on ancient sites I took little notice as I did not know why I was seeing him.

Last night, and three years later, Anne Ian and myself visited the site.
We began our evening with a walk around the park before visiting the protest site which was on the other side of a very busy road. It is a beautifully kept place and covers around 34 acres. I remembered the rugby matches that I had played on what used to be the Southend Rugby clubs venue here before they built their new one about half a mile away.

We went over to thee spot where I had seen the guard in my meditation and sitting on a handy bench we began to tune in to the site which is now just an outline in the ground where the old priory stood.

Not surprisingly I saw a monk. He was dressed in a black robe and it had a waist band of a lighter colour. Then a bearded figure walked across the site from the south towards us. He was carrying a staff and as he approached the site of the priory he knelt on one knee paying homage to the place. I twice picked up the name Robert. I would normally ignore names as I feel a little unsure about them but as I had it twice I gave the name to Ian and Anne. Anne had seen the same man as I had including the kneeling and paying homage to this sacred place. We walked over to the edge of the ruins as followed a narrow pathway to look at the place where Robert had first appeared and as we rounded a corner we saw a large board showing a reconstruction picture of the old site. My eyes were drawn to the name Robert Fitzweyne ( hope that is the correct spelling) Apparently the land for the priory had been donated by a certain Robert Fitzweyne. I am still surprised by the coincidences that come up when we do this sort of thing and to see this name did I must admit bring a smile to my face.

We left the park and crossed to the site of the protest camp and of course the burial site of a once powerful king. The people there were very helpful and friendly and as I got to know them i realised that the impression of an environmental protester that I had was a false one. At least in this case. Most of the people here had full time jobs and gave most of their spare time to raising public awareness of their cause. They have survived three fire bomb attacks and two years of abuse from passing motorists and uncountable missile have been aimed in their direction.
Two of the people we met said that they were on a spiritual journy that had taken them to India and other places around the globe and for some reason had led them to Camp Bling. I will not go into the character of the people on the site only to say that they do care and are not just there to be different from the crowd

I dowsed an area close by the kings burial and I would lay money that there are many more things to be found on this very important site. I did not pick up much more on the evening only the certainty that this place has not given up it's secrets yet. Perhaps one day when the council are moved less by the need to solve the traffic problems and more by a desire to say "take a look at where you came from it is important" all may be revealed.

we had a really interesting night, met some great people doing a good thing for the earth and our history. I think the team will be returning to the priory again as more information can be got about the place form dave and anne. I was picking up on a templar connection with the priory which i supose makes sense as their is some templar buildings in essex.

as dave said about the saxon king, i would love to do a big dig in the area as iam sure we would find many more artifacts, not only saxon but roman and even celtic.
The area had a certain feel to it over some other parts of camp bling, at some times seemed unsettled, not surprising really with what has gone on over this piece of land.

Well this is an old thread but guess what.

Camp Bling is going.

The council have decided against building a new road.

Sod the congestion I am pleased that the road is not going through.

These people took a lot of abuse but they truly believed in what they stood for.

So did the council of course.  Money and a road to open up the district so that speculative builders could rape and pillage (sorry develop) the area.

I just love the term develop.  Develop their greedy little bank accounts more like.

Yes we do need to build houses but isn't it odd that in this time of economic downturn we all have somewhere to live and don't seem short of houses.  Funny that.

Nice one I say.

New houses are only really for new people arriving in the country.

Now I wonder how we could stop that demand?
