Oh Venerable One - they have murdered thee!
Suffocated thy roots encased in iron -
Thou couldst not breathe.
Standing alone, dying of thirst -
They blamed thee.
Thou, who hast stood sentinel at the passing of centuries,
What times hast thou seen?
When the first Elizabeth reigned, thou wert a youth.
Wert thou then in the company of thy fellows?
Passed then a winding track under thy youthful branches,
Questing upwards towards the sky?
Or wert thou ever thus, alone in thy majesty?
Thou great being, thou living tree,
Home and shelter to the wild things,
Thou freely gavest rest and shade to the weary traveller,
And delighted the eye with thy beauty,
Guiding it up to the heavens in awe and wonder.
Thou hast seen countless seasons pass in procession -
Through storm and draught, summers and winters
Hast thou remained steadfast.
Now seeth the end of thy days.
Thy spreading branches torn from thee,
Thy limbs wrenched asunder - now gone.
Thy body still stands, forlorn and mutilated,
For all to mourn.
Oh Great One, we weep bitter tears for thee in thy distress,
And for what thou once wert.
But in our hearts we know
That even though thy body be no more,
Thy immortal spirit can never die.
Spirit to spirit, soul to soul,
We shall remember thee.
