Sounds a good idea but from experience I will say that if people are going to start swapping herbal remedies and the like I would recommend you attach some kind of disclaimer to the section along the lines of they use alternative therapies at thier own risk and should use them in conjunction with regular medicine, yadda yadda yadda...

Could somebody in the know please explain to me what Reiki Healing is all about.
I've never had it and know nothing of it but somebody was telling me it's all about healing the aura.
Auric healing has been going on for years so why has somebody decided to slap a foreign sounding name to it as well as extortional price tags.
I don't want to start bad mouthing just yet it because like I said, I know nothing about it and it could be the answer to all my aches and pains but I must admit I do smell a bit of a 'new age' rat with this one.
Now, there are quite a few answers to this question, and which one you get often depends of who you talk to. Here are a few to start you off:
The Reiki system of healing was originated by Mikao Usui. Ignoring the lovely story about how he "recieved" the symbols with which to work, it seems he had worked extensively with various forms of work with Ki (life force energy) including some form of martial arts, healing, meditation etc, and formulated his knowledge into a system of self-development, which included healing of the self and of others.
As part of this, he devised ways to help his students to "learn" depending on how they naturally work. This involved triggers to use until they were used to feeling the differences with the Ki acted in different situations. These triggers were tied into symbols and kotodama.
As his students practiced, daily, and studied, they moved through a system of levels, until they knew Ki well enough to work with other people, teach them, and learn from them in turn.
When Reiki became "westernised", the symbols became the focus for a quick and easy way to learn to work with energy and to offer healing to people. Without the discipline of practice and experience, the levels started to have certain restriction put around them, until we are where we are today....do level one, then after x treatments, or x amount of time, you can do your level 2 and work with other people.
In my opinion, Reiki is still a remarkable self development practice, and a great way to start working with energy, but has become bogged down in dogma, rights and wrongs, politics and in-fighting, instead of progressing and being developed further by each individual.
As for being smelling a "new age" rat. I can see where you are coming from. Ask around, not all "Masters" charge an extortionate amount. It depends on why they are doing it.
Some see it as a therapy, like many others, and that in passing on their knowledge and skill, there is no reason not to charge for their time and materials (course manuals etc). Of course there are some who do it purely as a business.
People generally go to people they feel comfortable with.
There are people who would like to be taught almost as a business transaction (I was one, but then, whilst i was surprised that there actually was something in all of this, I later went to a Reiki Master who did it for love, and only taught when asked to. She charged a modest sum, and threw in manuals, dinner, unlimited questions, and a chat whenever).
As for it being auric healing, I am not really sure what auric healing is.
Reiki practitioners sometime work hands off, "scanning" the aura for differences, hot areas, cold bits, etc (byosen) which represent physical or emotional imbalances, which are reflected in the aura. Is that auric healing? Some work hands-on, working on or over the chakras. Some work intuitively. Some use a combination.
There are probably other ways to work that i am not aware of.

Auric healing is for people who claim to be able to see auras. They identify 'dark spots' on the aura or breaks in it and believe these anomalies in the auric field will create a negative imbalance in that area on the physical body.
They work to heal the defective areas of the aure believing this will have a positive knock-on effect to the physical body.
it is such a shame that reiki has been bogged down in dogma... it is such a wonderful way to work.. especially with self healing.. the problem is , as meiah said, that some people run it as a business and charge huge amounts for it.. "teaching" large amounts of people at a time and allowing them to progress through the levels at an alarming rate(if they have the cash to do it) giving the student no time to evolve on their own and experience what a fascinating healing method it really is.
i have been really lucky.. i found reiki (or maybe it found me) at the right time in my life.. it was what i needed ... (to learn to self heal) ... and from this i feel i have grown so much! .... my first reiki master .. i thank for introducing me to it.. but i quickly found that i didn,t hold the same views as her and needed to find someone else ...i then met meiah!!
it grieves me that reiki "schools" have given it the bad name "flaky reiki" as there are masters out there that truly know alot about the subject to pass on to others, and who's first love is the reiki not the cash! _________________ i'm not afraid of dying...it's living that scares me!!!!

yes please to the healing forum. it would be a great place to ask for healing when one my children are ill, which is quite regular. sighs.
