I had another hospital visit today. The time spent in the room with the doctor was actually very brief (that was the good news)
So afterwards the Mother and I decided to stop for a cup of tea in the little coffee shop inside the hospital.
I sat down at a table while the Mother went to get the drinks.
She came back in a bit of a fluster. Not wanting tea she decided to opt for coffee instead, so she asked for a tea with one sugar (for me) and a black coffee with no sugar for herself.
The spotty little oik behind the counter then proceeded to lecture her on how it was the shop's policy to discourage customers from saying "white coffee" or "black coffee" and instead they must ask for either "coffee with" or "coffee without" (milk, presumerably).
In true style of the Mother she then informed him to shove the tea, the coffee and the milk up his arse and left.
I've heard stories like this for many years, how you're not supposed to say 'blackboard', 'blackmail', 'blacklist' or 'black mood' but I've never actually experienced it in real life before.
I always thought those stories were peddled around by scarmongerers trying to convince us we're all going to hell in a politically correct handbasket.
So I have to ask, when did 'black' become a dirty word?
Black has never been a dirty word but it is rapidly being turned into one by the PC brigade.
As far as I know the black friends I have, have no objection to me referring to them as black, but in truth I don't see them as anything other than friends and the subject is just a non starter.
We take the piss out of each other as all blokes do and simply try to be a better mickey taker than they are.
I have a friend Eddie who I have been friends with for forty years and in all truth it never occurred to me that he was dark skinned until someone in a pub said something about it.
I certainly would not give a cuss if they refereed to the fact that I was white.
Black people don't detest the word black, in fact it's exactly the opposite.
As David said, it's the PC brigade trying to "not" offend "minorities". White people are becoming the minority, when are "white" coffee and "whiteboards" going to be against the law ? The answer is never as the PC brigade are all bigots !! _________________
the only offence my black mates takes are when they're reffured to as "niggers" they hate that from the white folk, but from their own it's ok, they don't have a problem with black, plus if we didn't label them as "black" what would they be? "slightly brown with a touch of caramel round the edges?" every aboriginal fellow I have know has always referred to themselves and other aboriginals as "black fella".....

Yes Raymond it does, except it's all anti anti arab. People are warned not to say arab, but "maghrebin". As regards coffee & tea in bars or restaurants or tea shops over here they're more likely to be served without milk anyway, and you ask for a "petit crème", for coffee or for a sprinkling of milk in tea, therefore the idea of black or white is moot.
Nowadays in France "blackboards" are green, even though still called blackboards, and most schools use whiteboards anyway (I know all this as my wife is a teacher lol).
Rap music and black dance music are all the rage here, so political correctness isn't rife in that respect.
As the church has had nothing to do with schools since 1901 in France, and it is illegal to teach religion in schools, veils and all visible signs of religious appartenance are illegal in schools, and if someone comes to school wearing anything from a veil to a kippa, or a cross, they are told to remove it. If they don't they are sent home until they do ! _________________

Not being one for conspiracy theories (you know me) but I have long believed that all this PC nonsense is to gear us up for a race war.
I have thought for years that political correctness is a way of making all of us racist because I do believe the next world war is coming and it will be a war of race.
There is only one race on this planet, the human race.
Racism was invented by man to justify slavery, as one could not put another human into slavery, which is why Romans talked of barbarians (anyone not Roman) and why in the time of the slave trade it was justified by saying that black people were not human, but just hairless gorillas.
Black people according to slavers didn't and couldn't have a soul, as only humans have souls.
It was thanks to people like Olaudah Equiano, Thomas Clarkson & William Wilberforce that the anti slave bill came into force.
Once we realise that there is no need for racial hatred then all should be well. (In fact all this hassle has nothing to do with race, but is another religious war, the youngest religion against the second oldest surviving monotheistic religion.) _________________

I disagree. I think it's basic human instinct to want to have power and superiority over other human beings - how easy that is when the other human beings look so different. I also thinks it's basic human nature to be distrustful of people who look/act differently and to feel more comfortable with people like yourself.
Nobody would openly admit it, of course, but when I hear people say "I have black friends" or "I have asain friends" - I can just imagine what these 'black' or 'asian' friends are like - very 'westernised' and/or very 'British' in their mannerisms and lifestyle.
How many of you have close friendships with black or asian people who don't speak English or who live very much by the customs of their home country?

Have to disagree again Hunter. Many of the slavetraders were themselves black.
Slavery has been going on forever. Possibly back into pre-history since the dawn of time.
It's only in fairly modern times that we've suddenly become "civilised" and made ourselves believe that it's wrong.

Agreed, however the point I was trying to make was a lot of the Muslims I speak to (and where I live that's MOST people I speak to) consider themsleves to be of the 'Islamic race' - not the 'Islamic religion'.
In fact, some of the more hardline Muslims I know consider themselves to be of the new 'master race' - a bit like the Germans did in WW2.
