It's the same as the law of threefold return "Everything you do, good or ill, shall return threefold".
Basically it's a way of telling people what not to do. Keeping people in their place. What is the point of learning the craft and learning how to manipulate energy but then not doing it???
It's an idiot's guide to not abusing the craft, but if you do abuse it you'll find it will be taken away anyway.
I argue that all magick is harming someone. People go on about 'freewill' and 'manipulation' but I say if you really have a moral problem with affecting another person's freewill then you probably shouldn't mess about with magick in the first place.
The Rede is for Wiccans and not all of them live by it.
Like most of the supposed 'elder writings' it is not ancient, having been written in the last century, as far as I am aware.
I'm not a Wiccan so I don't adhere to it........
There is a difference. Wiccans usually follow one of the traditional paths, i.e. Gardarian, Alexandrian, Dianic etc., which all basically follow the teachings of Gerald Gardner with slight differences. Witches generally don't follow the teachings of Gardner and are more 'pick and choose' with the spiritual path they follow.

interesting. i've read about the different traditions and they all seem a bit rigid in their ways. I dont think that would be for me tbh
No it wasn't for me either. I tried it for years but I just got sick and tired of some post-menopausal HPS telling me I had to address her as "My Lady" before I spoke to her.
HA! Post menopausal women have that effect on many.... :)
Scott I think what you are asking is there something that is right and wrong.. if you ask us lot on here we will most likely all answer no... do what you want do what feels right...
*points to gut*... this is your personal bulls#*% meter.. trust what it tells you _________________ as a babe drinks from its mothers breast so too does man milk mother earth
i appreciate that people who have been doing things for a long time will know a lot more than me and i am willing to learn from them but at the same time i dont want to do things in somebody else's way. i want to do them in my way. so how can i learn from other people without just following them with their way?

Do it their way first and change things to your liking as you go along. _________________ Please visit our main site
And that's the beauty of the craft. Unlike other religions - including Wicca - we really can pick the bits we like and leave out the bits we don't.
Other religions say it's wrong to do that, that you must blindly follow the "truths" as laid down by your chosen religion.
I say that's a load of crap. Why shouldn't your spiritual path be tailor-made just to suit you?
That makes more sense to me.
If you want to follow Gardner you may as well follow freemasonry, that's where he stole his ideas from, not the other way round as many wiccans will protest.
OK ... he did lose the Hebrew analogy bit....
... and he did live in a windmill ( I think) and look like Catweazle...respect!
Never believed in threefold return, if someone wrongs me, justice prevails.
Never believed in the three degrees even though I initiated to the third, bu then again I've been communion, blessed by Krshna devotees and had a buddhist ceremony. Wouldn't say i'm either or other.
Write your own creed, your own book, your own religion, bear in mind you cannot transgress nature nor the cosmos, though I guess you can tweak it somewhat. _________________ ---

Very true.

He did, on the Isle of Man.

Absolutely.

I've been "officially" initiated seven times, all of them by mad HPS's and none of them meant diddly-squat.
when you said the three degrees i though you meant the pop group samjaza but obviously not. what are these?
Sorry Scott, I almost missed this.
In the more traditional paths of Wicca there is a degree system. First second and third degrees.
When you join a coven you enter a training period (usually a year and a day) after which you take an exam, if you pass then you are initiated and are known as a 'first degree' and this means you can now take a full part in all the workings of the coven.
At some point in the future, when you decide and if your HPS agrees you may reach the second degree. At second degree level you may be appointed to act as either HP or HPS by your HPS, and you may also be asked to teach any newer members.
Again, at a point of your chosing and if your HPS agrees you may go for the third and final degree. After this you enter the 'inner circle'. You may, if you wish, break away from your coven and go and form your own. At third degree you are always referred to as either a HP or a HPS.
Any covens you may form however will always be under the wing of the original parent coven and your original HPS.
i didnt realise it was all so intense. the more i read about traditional paths the more i realise there probably not for me. i like the idea of making it suit me more
