The two leading theories of conformity are that people look to the group because they're unsure of what to do, and that people go along with the norm because they are afraid of being different, said Dr. Gregory Berns, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia.

One reason behind conformity is that, in terms of human evolution, going against the group is not beneficial to survival, Berns said. There is a tremendous survival advantage to being in a community, he said.

Oh! dear,to think that I am contributing to the decline of survival!
I have always taken a stand in being 'different',and refuse to go along with 'the sheep'. At the grand old age of 8, I stood up in class,and told the teacher she had made a spelling mistake. I didn't want the others in the class to go along with something that I knew to be wrong.
These sort of things remind me of the old tale of the Emperors new clothes.
If I am wrong on a subject,I will admit it,but if I am right,I stick to my guns and won't go along with the 'sheep'.
