Why do armies exist?Sounds daft I know, and the first answer is that armies exist to defend the realm.
What does that mean exactly?

I thought armies existed to fill out sleevies.

Armies exist to enforce political will upon others by use of force where reason does not suffice

Sounds like you've met my boss.

Sometimes it really is better to say nothing than say something stupid.

I disagree, Raymond. If I don't say something stupid, it doesn't give you the opportunity to be a cantankerous old git and then you would run the risk of just evaporating into the ether...

I was actually going to post yesterday that they give us something for our handies to fix to.

Don't worry, you're new. You'll soon get over that.

ah Raymond / Bravo you really make me laugh
Armies are there to keep peace LOL
and how ridiculous is that

Raymond

Not ridiculous at all. Every country has it's own interests to protect, without a useful and strong deterent anybody could just walk in and take what we hold dear.

I never mentioned peace

I have just re-read your post Evergreen and I think that the role of peace keeper is one role played by armies along with defence of the realm.
However they are also used to quell dissatisfied population and to protect the interests of big business and dictators . So some benefit from an army whilst others are robbed by them. A soldiers job is to fight regardless of the reason.

Armies exist so that the highest bidder can take over a country

I'm sure the decent people of Greece are happy to have an army at the moment.

I bet that the politicians are even happier, the army can protect there jobs.
This trouble isn't just over one poor sod being shot.
It is about and underlying and growing discontent within the population.
Solution, bring out the army.
Depending on circumstance of political climate armies can be used for you or against you.
It's a pity we don't have a bit more of it here. Rioting that is.

I would agree with that!
However, governments mustn't be allowed to fall just because the great unwashed of a society feel a bit pissed off.
From watching the news reports the vast majority of the people involved in the Greek rioting seem to be young people and students - soap dodgers all.
Let's face it, it really wouldn't do to bring down a government because a few scruffy students with no real life experience are a bit annoyed because some scabby hoody got shot.
Incidentally, I haven't yet heard why the police shot him. I'd lay a month's wages and have a wild guess that he was up to no good.

Armies exist to keep the population down.
As the population explosion continues more wars will break out.

That can be taken two ways.
Do you mean they kill off the population or they supress them?
I think it is a bit of both really.
|
Raymond

Of course.
Disease is meant to keep the numbers down but we manage to keep breeding like rabbits anyway.
And when you have gooky religions like Catholicism telling people to keep breeding but don't wear a condom then the simple people of Africa will do it.

armies exist so people like us can write things like this without the fear
of being dragged out our beds put up against a wall and shot. freedom of speech is a wonderfull thing indeed.
my children may never have to pick up a gun to defend their country or wear a uniform, but they are damn proud of those who do and have.

I don't quite agree.
Armies do exist to protect us but some also exist to keep populations under control.
There are many reasons why armies exist.

Why is that Diana? Because other people happen to have a different opinion to yours?
How very 'conspiracy theorist' of you.
Anyone who disagrees with you just has to be wrong don't they?

armies are used by the rich and powerful to steal other peoples land, money and property..without getting hurt themselves!
can you see blair, brown or mandy sorting out the taliban?

Well that is what a lot of armies are used for and always have been.
I was brought up on a diet of soldiery heroics and it was just propaganda.
It tell the story when trying to get a combatent soldier to speak abot his experiences is met with silence.
I am proud of our fighting men but less proud of what they often fight for.

I did want to say Queen and country, but seeing as the afghans only have pitchforks and homemade APM, which blow up their makers more often then not, for Queen and Country doesn't really cover it
