The Joys Of A Labour Government

Yesterday was the Queen's speech at the state opening of parliament (how she must hate having to do that) where Her Majesty outlines the things her government intend to do in the future.

One of the things outlined was a proposal put forward by the delightful Harriet Harman MP (ooops, sorry Harperson!) which suggests employers should be encouraged to positively discriminate in favour of a woman or a person of an ethnic minority.

So what that means is, if two people apply for the same job. Both appear to be equally qualified for the position and both seem to be right for the job, the job should go to the one who is from an ethnic background or female - just because they are from an ethnic background or female.

So basically, if you're a white male, you're f*cked. (This isn't an excuse Waffle King! - Get a job!)

When I was at school 'equality' meant that all people should be treated equally - not 'all people except white blokes'.

I truly hope this Labour government keep true to form and manage to cock-up this proposal like so many of their previous proposals because if this goes through parliament I can see a terrible backlash coming from this.

That BNP members' list will quadruple!

It really is outrageous.

Perhaps we should all mark ourselves down as having an ethnic background when we next fill in a job application form.

And gentlemen - you might want to consider marking yourselves down as a transsexual too - that will really bump you up the list.

Yeah - ENGLISH!

Labour have been the same for as long as I can remember.

Stupid policies and all the monetary strategy of a compulsive gambler.

The trouble is that no one looks at the history behind these political parties.  I don't need to because I have seen them come and go.

If they did look up the history I doubt that they would vote at all.
Waffle King

Speaking from a Labour household i can say but one thing, that could actually change the entire wave of this conversation, and that is.

would you rather Maggie and the rest of the conservatories? personally, i wouldn't cos it wouldn't only have the same pollicies, life wouldn't be as fun, so the Labour party has a few weird policies.

Ok i have a bit of an ethnic background anyway, 2 generations since, so i can't comment on that, but on women getting the place over a man, this i can, ok, so it's all this "equality" business coming up again, but say it's for hardly labour like building site, this policy is stupid, but i'd still give them a vote, rather then conservative! (Sorry to any conservatives on this forum, but to me, if you stick your hand out at the end of the week for your pay, you're a laborer   Big Grin )

YES! YES! A thousand times YES!

Oh I see, so we all have to continue to suffer like we have over the past 11 years just for the sake of fun?

Unless the Tories seriously cock it up before the next election then it looks pretty likely they're going to get in, and to be honest polling day can't come quickly enough.

I don't mean to be rude Waff but you don't work and you don't (I assume) own your own home, so it's no wonder you think we're better off under Labour, but believe me, when the day comes when you do work all the hours under the sun, and you do have a mortgage to pay and you're sick to death of paying thousands of pounds to keep a car on the road and you're fed up with seeing all your hard earned tax money being spent on refugees and crackpot schemes, then you just may change your mind.
Bravo

Fully agree with Raymond.  The Labour party is, and always was, a shower of you-know-what.

I remember being invited randomly as a council tenant (about 14 years or so ago) in Leeds to a (labour run) council meeting about proposed schemes by the Conservative government with regard to how the council ran things.

So, the council put their pitch forward saying that under this scheme we could end up with foreign companies running some public services.  The people present were from all walks of life and all political persuasions.  So, the council said, would YOU want your services run by a for example French company?'

They sat back then thinking they had made some wonderful point, when pretty much everyone in the room blurted out a big 'YES!' because they had all suffered from the appalling wastes, mismanagement and frankly idiotic ideas that the council had come out with (Leeds became the joyrider capital of England purely because of the councils idiocy for one example, wont go into it now).

The look on the council peoples face was a real picture, they thought they had made one of those political points that cannot be countered.  They were wrong.

Waffle, you are also wrong on this one mate, sorry.  You will learn, as most do as they get older.

Well said.

Hey, i just put my point across! but i don't have work at the moment but i have actually worked ta Raymond, 3 months in a dairy to be exact and my money was taxed, so yes i know what you are saying, but i firmly believe in the Labour party, if the conservatives where still in office or come back to office, this country will go back to the wolves, no "But it won't" or "maybe in a half arsed way" it damn well will!! look at history, it'll tell you that Conservatives made the big mess (WW1, WW2, Conservative governments in power) after them the Labour party came to government and the country picked up! it'll happen again!

I personally know a Conservative Man, for those in the south essex area who have heard of him Mr Ray Howard a diamond bloke, went to school with my mum, knew my dad quite well, has even offered to write me a reference on my next employment paper documents, but even so, i don't want him to be in charge of my wages and etc for when i do get my job!

But i have the youthful voice, no doubt you all thing I'm an arrogant toe-rag for even having my say in this, but so be it, i do have a point
Raymond

The Conservative party can be blamed for many things but I don't think it's fair to blame them for causing WW1 and WW2, and I don't think the current Labour government have anything to crow about when it comes to getting us involved with wars we shouldn't be involved in.

Don't get me wrong here, I don't support the Tories and there's a lot wrong with them but given the choice between a conservative government or another four years of this Labour government then the conservatives get my vote.

Congratulations for having a job for 3 months and we are all taxed regardless of whatever party is in government, but the point I was making is when you actually own something like a house or a car then you will understand how difficult it is to live under a Labour government. So until you do own something of value and until you are paying your fair share into the pot then no, you really shouldn't have an opinion.

Oh, and by the way, when WW1 kicked off the Liberal Party were in government.
Bravo

Funny you should mention wars.

We are now taxed more heavily than we were at the darkest times of WWII.

You vote for who you want mate, I would never argue with that.  I would debate issues though, as that is a good thing
Raymond

Labour has always been in favour of higher taxes, just go and look at their history.
The more you earn the more you pay.
That's why the unemployed like them so much because they are not taxed.

But it isn't only a question about tax, it's everything.

Can anybody honestly say they think Britain is a better place than it was in 1997?

I'm not being rude Waff but this is my whole point, how old were you in '97? Six? Seven?

You couldn't possibly know how better off we all were.

Back in the mid-90's I had just bought my flat off the council for a dirt cheap price.
My mortgage was less than half what I pay now.
I had just started my new job, I had applied for 3 very well paid jobs and was offered all of them so I had to pick the one that best suited me.

Now, more than half my wages goes on my mortgage alone.
My flat isn't work a piss in a bucket.
And every month people are being laid off at my firm.

Oh yeah, Labour are great.

Just look at your own situation Waff if you want to see Labour in action. How difficult are you finding it getting a job?

I know Ray Howard's son who has also been a councillor.

Nice guy but a total nob.

Ask him about the time he shagged a nineteen stone Taxi controller we called jelly belly on the office floor.

Waff Wake up mate.  I knew these people before you were born.

Sorry chaps but I am in a Raymond no nonsense mood today and the truth is lots of fun.

That doesn't make him a bad person. We've all done that.
