Seas SongWell I will go first this is the second short story I have ever written (and the last to date) it is not really my thing, however I was prompted to post it after by David's rigging tale
and saying I wasn't really elemental in belief.. I think I have had to take those words back....
This was written some years ago now
Seas Song
Tiarna knew she shouldn’t stray too far. She could swim, yet not too well. But the calling of the waves was so powerful, like a present at Christmas she so wanted to open. Gleefully she danced and jumped through the waves to make it past the breakers. Tiarna heard the song of the sea, and answered the call. She dared to go the extra distance.
Pushing through the waves Tiarna could see him. He was beautiful, like a king, radiant and glowing. His body cast a shimmering light on the water. He called to Tiarna playfully “Come swim with me Tiarna”
Mesmerized by the sight Tiarna's eyes fixated on him. Gently the waters swallowed her dragging her downward. Still watching the glimmering colours as they faded with the sun, Tiarna sank.
The song was changing; subtly deep tones overrode the child like tune; replacing Tiarna’s playful music with deadly desire.
A grim laugh surrounded her, echoing volumes in her head. It never ceased. Tiarna plummeted silently through the gallons spinning wildly; it seemed she would be forever going down, swallowed by the liquid from his gills.
Helpless, Tiarna had not struggled. Releasing herself to the water; she looked on as creatures ignored her passing. Tiarna never lost her wits, but watched all of this as though it were a movie freeze framed for extra impact.
Letting him take her at will, she did not resist. Now he performed his desire, holding her gently in his arms stroking her skin, provoking her to relinquish her life. Coaxing each breath from her being, he slowly strangled the sweet child, seemingly crushing her lungs with no fresh breath to revamp their life. He drowned Tiarna. All the while laughing with glee at the strength he processes against these mortal being.
Upon the shore Tiarna’s mother begins to panic
“Where is my child?" Mother looks to the water, spreading further than she has travelled.
"No! Not her!” She begs looking to the heavens for an answer.
Running up and down the shoreline in vain, mother ventures out as far as she dare. She cannot swim. Screaming in anguish, the reality sets in, Tiarna is here no more.
The gods have made their choice. Mother takes Ethrals small hand, squeezes it and mutters a prayer, an offering to the water gods.
“Please take care of her.
Do not punish her for what I lack.
I gave you this sweet babe; I owe you no more. “
Walking away from the shore they do not notice a glimmer on the water. Tiarna’s voice joins the call.
