Prehistoric child is found with toy hedgehog at Stonehenge | Quote: | This toy hedgehog, found in a child's grave at Stonehenge, is proof of what we have always known - children have always loved to play.
The chalk figurine was probably a favourite possession of the three year old, and placed next to the child when they died in the late Bronze Age or early Iron Age, around 3,000 years ago.

Is it me or archaeologists talk absolute rubbish an awful lot.
They do not know what this object represents culturally.
How can they, but now it will be a toy hedgehog for ever.

Why is it not a toy ?
|
david hobbs

For exactly the same reason that it is a toy.
How do they know what it is?
Perhaps it still had the Toysrus label on it

What makes them so sure it's a hedgehog?

They used to cook hedgehogs in clay
When it's done, the needles come off a treat and apparently it is very tasty.

You just had to point that out didn't you?
You really give me the needle sometimes.
It doesn't really appeal to us that you northerners eat Hedgehogs.
It's just not a done thing in the south you know. Squirrel is much more fashionable down here!

When I worked at Pontins I shared a chalet with a guy who claimed that it was delicious.
Personaly I don't like anything to sharp.

When its done, the clay is hard, so they have to smash it and open it like a nut. The meat comes out and all the spikes stay inside the clay shell.
It doesn't appeal to me tbh
