Surely in mind there is always the potential for a thought that no-one else has thought before, but because it exists in potential, and has always existed in potential, it is not original.

Maybe we need to define original?

That is sound advice.

It seems to me that our thoughts are mere extentions of the thoughts that have gone before, and we are just moving them on to the next thinker.
