Newgrange

Am off to Newgrange, and the Hill of Tara on Friday (fly to Ireland on Wednesday). Been aching to be there for years (contented sigh)

Anyone know much about these sites?

I loved NewGrange, was built way before the pyramids and Stonehenge, and part of a complex of chambered tombs.

I wish I were there.

Then go!!

Also try the Hill of Tara. One of the most atmospheric places I have ever been to. Now it appears as two interlinked iron age hill forts, with a chambered tomb nearby called the Mound of Hostages.

Seat of the Celtic Irish kings, and also much history based around the druids and also monastic Celtic life.

Stunning views. On a clear day you are supposed to be able to see 3/4 of Ireland from there.

My photos do not really capture it, as it is best seen from above to appreciate the scale of the place, and the views are best seen not through the lens of a camera.

I spoke to a lady the other day and she told me that they want to put a motorway through the site. Tara that is.
meiah

No. It will go near the hill, and certainly through the surrounding countryside, but not through the Hill itself.

Its a bit like building a motorway through Stonehenge. The road needs to be improved, as do the roads around Tara, but damaging the site itself is not an option that is even being considered (according to our guide, who seemed well connected).

The lady I spoke to was about sixty something and had just been called to Ireland for her campaigning expertise.

Her first protest was in the fifties or sixties with Bertrand Russell so she carries some cue dos

Having done a bit of digging around, it looks like the M3 motorway route passes east of the Hill of Tara, and is further away from the Hill than the existing N3 national road.

It does pass through the Tara Valley though, which is rich in sites of architectural interest (160 approx), 19 of which are directly on the construction route and have yet to be excavated.

Hmmmmm (angry frown)
