Living in the moment.

Mystics speak of living in the moment.

What would be your idea of living in the moment and would it bring benefits in life or not?
meiah

To me, living in the moment brings complete awareness of that moment.

To be completely absorbed by what you are doing, what you are experiencing. To experience it fully. No distraction.

To me, that brings a peace, a calm. There is no worry, no planning, just complete enjoyment and fulfillment. I guess being at peace with myself.

To do that in each thing I do is hard to achieve, but I do achieve it at certain times. When I am doing a treatment. When I am doing something outside, like weeding, picking berries, walking on a hilltop. Creating something, making jam, making cards. Reading. Building a fire. Talking with people, feeling their responses, watching them think, learning a different view. Just being with a person, totally focussed on them.

There are activities where I cannot do that, at least I have not yet found a way. Driving, always looking ahead, reading the traffic. Working on spreadsheets, anticipating the outcome, formulating figures.

So to be in the moment you cannot think.

Ummm.... for me it is more that to be in the moment, there is no need to analyse.

You can think, because to appreciate something, to feel it requires a conscious acknowledgement of it, or else it would pass you by...that is a thought, but not a thought train necessarily, nor is it a comparison, critical analysis, a questioning.

To be aware, do you need to acknowledge what you are aware of in order to bring it into your reality?
I feel warm, hadn't thought about it until just now. I could have been warm before I thought about it, but I don't know. so being warm before I thought about it has no relevance to me. It is an assumption.

I think when I am making jam. I am aware of the smell of the fruit, the feel of the warmth from the pan, the gentle sound of the molten jam at a rolling boil, the vibrant purple of the juice from the blackberries, my mouth watering.....but I don't need to analyse it, I know what I am doing and know when it is ready, so I don't need to analyse the steps or my actions, I can just enjoy the experience.
If I were to think about the process, that experience becomes one of watching the clock, constantly testing for setting point, rushing around.

So maybe for the that is the difference. Being in the moment is to experience it at every level, with all my senses, all of my "self", to be totally aware, rather than to rationalise it, analyse it, monitor it.

Then we experience the moment in a different way.

To live in the moment it to make the most of my life each and everyday.. to honour the life that I have and not always thinking of tomorrow and what if's or maybe's.. if I want something I make it happen I dont wish for it

Iv'e been thinking. No come back a minute I listen to you don't I.

If when you are thinking of the future or the past and you are not in the now you might just as well be asleep or dead. What a waste of a life.

Well It is just a thought.

Tell you what. I just tried being in the moment and it is so fast that it does not exist. Try it, it puts a very strange feeling into the solar plex.

Do we pass through the moment or does the moment pass through us.

Help.

I must stop having thoughts.
evergreen

Yes David you do listen well your post appear to portray that concept.

a moment is an amount of time.. you are looking at the smallest amount of time you can and yes your gut would feel sick doing that.

Maybe living in the moment is not looking back or living with regret just enjoying where you are and what you are doing and moving forward with happiness
david hobbs

I also think that living in the moment is remembering to look at the sheer wonder of creation that is all around you.

Once we sink into reverie it is gone.

If you have seventy five years of life how much of that time is spent being truly alive?
evergreen

a very very small amount ... I may be most alive when I am a sleep... :D

I had heard that
billy nomates

living in the moment is about stopping the internal dialogue of the mind.

the past is coloured by our opinions of it and the future has not happened so to dwell on the past or fantasize about the future for long periods of time is creating a massive turmoil in ones mind. studies have shown that people repeat the same thoughts over and over again.Approximately 80% are regurgitated...i wish i could have, should have etc.....

living in the moment means getting on with whatever is in front of you.ie if you are playing golf then play golf and stop worrying about what you have to buy for tomorrows dinner.

mystics talk about this because when the mind stops then there is the possibility for something else to happen..(think about it yourselves).

a psychiatrist will tell you to stop the internal dialogue because it will drive you nuts!
evergreen

and a mystic may tell you to stop the dialoge and let it be.. learn from the silence feel the silence ...
and thus you may deepen and refine your awareness by opening your heart and touching reality

Other mystics might say listen to the noise. Go into the noise. Find it's source.
