In the presence of God

Very close to where I work is the Excel centre. For those of you who don't know what that is it's the biggest entertainment venue in Britain. It could hold six football pitches - it's massive.

It hosts various conventions and gatherings from Star Wars to Comic books to the latest fashions in babywear, (I kid you not).

A while ago it hosted 'An evening of bliss with Pastor Chris' - again, I kid you not.

This was an all night event where a bunch of Christians (Evangelicals mostly) spent the night together listening to this 'Pastor Chris' bloke tellng them how wonderful God is.

Tickets were £30 a pop and by 7:30pm they had to close the doors because the place was filled to capacity. £30 each, filling an area the size of six football pitches - you do the maths!

Anyway, ticket holding people were being turned away after 7:30 and fair enough, people were complaining.
On my way home from work I was talking to one very nice family and they said they were turned away.
I said that must be very disapointing but they said they didn't feel disapointment because..... (I'll write this in capitals so you don't miss it)..... THEY GOT TO TOUCH THE DOOR OF THE BUILDING HOLDING PASTOR CHRIS, THEREFORE THEY WERE IN THE PRESENCE OF GOD.

There were 5 in this family, all adults except one. So that's £120 to touch the door of a place that has hosted 'Rough & Raw: The Motorcycle Convention', 'Erotica 2008: The Business Of Selling Sex' and the regular host of 'The World Arms Trade Fair'.

But to that family, for that brief moment, it was the most holy place in the world.

It makes you think. If this 'Pastor Chris' bloke can get people to part with their cash just to touch a door, what else could he get them to do?

It's absolutely fascinating, not to mention a little bit scary.

The London Excel Centre.

Well literally BUYING into a belief system then.

How small must their imaginations, to say nothing of their lives be.

Needing a stranger to bring meaning to your life is just a bit like paying for a brass.

I better go check the piggy bank.

I need some meaning, and the last place i shall look is within.

I'd pay 100 buck to see U2....    ha!  they inspire me :)

maybe he helps inspire them maybe he shows them some thing good- all in all that doesnt matter to us..

yes we may think it is scary but then who are we to stand back and tell them what to do..

I see his followers as puppets on a string.

As the pope once said.

The rod of salvation is in your hole.
So rock your arse to save your soul.

They are being shafted.

I see what you're saying EG but I just think it's very strange that all those people were willing to pay £30 a go just to have this bloke tell them how wonderul Jesus is.
Can't they do the same thing at home without it costing them a penny?
evergreen

Of course they can Raymond I'm not into stuff like that myself god I find it difficult to go to any groups unless I 'm running it ha!... and yet I think that often many people are looking for someone to do things for them, people like someone else to be responsible for their beliefs and their learning.. and look what all these people have created/manifested someone they can pay a whole lot of dosh to just to do that for them.... Many people like to think that there are great inspirational souls on earth sent here to guide and show them the light...  I do think it is a shame they they don't just look within

I agree. They'd learn a heck of a lot more and save themselves some money into the bargain.

I often remind myself we are all different.. we all walk in our own light and in our own time.......   and that there is nothing quite so wonderfully knowing as someone who is reformed... perhaps these people will one day be encouraging others to look within???  :)
david hobbs

Yes Evergreen everyone truly believes that they know the truth.

The more I look the more I realise that there is no truth.

Seek and you shall find.

But that something may be for you and not universal so keep it to your ruddy self.

I'm at Canary Wharf. I'm the one in the crowd laughing when the shares are plummeting and the dealers are walking around holding their bellies from stomach ulcers.
Nah !¬ i'm not that horrrible  Big Grin
Raymond

No way! All this time we've known each other and you're literally spitting distance from where I live and work Sam.

Do you live at Canary Wharf or work there?
