Very good question David as always. Not sure I truly know the answer.
From my reading there seem to be many forms of "ghost" or "spirit" and from what I can tell, how they manifest can depend on how/why they were formed.
For instance, historical figures seem to be typically silently treading the same routes, sometimes at the same times every day/year etc almost like a video replaying itself, with no conciousness of their surroundings. Doors and walls which have been moved or blocked are passed through regardless, people are ignored totally.
Ghosts of persons who had suffered a violent death seem to be more concious, sometimes responding to people or objects.
There are theories that as ghosts get older they fade, like a battery running down, which is why I'm not aware of any reported ghostly cavemen!
Poltergeists, noisy, naughty, definately responsive and generally quite shortlived seem to be more "modern" ghosts, possibly vengeful or possesive of thier percieved property. Possibly unaware of thier passing or maybe they just don't care. Seem to use their energy on mischeviousness rather than making a visual appearance. Perhaps they can't make a visual form? Maybe they seem short-lived due to their high energy. Also linked to young persons, teenagers, children etc possibly attention seeking. Not in my opinion though.
Just a brief look at what I've read over the years, I agree with some of it and feel it's a good basis for investigation.
As for your shadow people David. I've read lots about them, from them being aliens, ghosts, people from a parallel dimension. I have never seen them and have no real opinion as I have no evidence in any direction.
This whole topic is by far my favourite in the paranormal world. I love hearing others ideas and theories :)
