Driving me nuts

There was a case I think at the turn of the century up in the midlands where a witchcraft killing was said to have taken place.n  I think the insrument of despatch was a pitchfork.

I have been to the area and even met with a woman who claimed to be a decedent of this line of witches.  She called herself Beth.

Their coven is named after a very visible hill.

Sorry but it is driving me mad trying to remember the name of the witches in the area so that I can look up the case, and put it on here.
Raymond

Do you mean the Pendle Hill Witches?
david hobbs

I knew I could rely on you Raymond.

Yes it was the Pendle witches.

The one I met was with a guy who declared himself a wood witch and was setting up lines of defence against foreign invaders.

Apparently he was using the motorway grid to build this defence because the gaps between the woods lef in this country are to great to make his defenses viable.  Now that's what I call using your initiative.

Beth, his partner declared herself a Pendle witch, but oddly, she kept getting the dates of the festivals, as I call them, wrong.

There are some pretty odd people out there.

Still now I can look up this murder case so that's good.

One of the Pendle lot was Alice Nutter

I think Anne is a bit of an expert on this so I shall pick her brains next time I see her.

Alice Nutter.

Must be one of a long line of Nutters ending with the one I met.
Raymond

Strangely enough I just read a book about the Pendle Witches.

It's a wonderfully romantic story but I do think they probably weren't Witches at all.

Alice Nutter, Old Mother Chattox and the rest of the 'coven' were outcasts of thier community and all of them probably would have had what we would describe today as learning difficulties.
If both families were around today they most certainly would have been under social care.

They made a living as beggars and Old Chattox played on her reputation as a Witch to get money out of people.

All this happened at the height of the persecutions so with all this in mind it was no wonder they were singled out as Witches.

YOu have to remember as well that all the 'evidence' against them was provided by a disturbed 9 year old child.

And so many other so called witches, who were put to death, for silly stuff, thank god their still not doing it now

Gia look at salom, turned out to be contamined wheat I think

Apparently, across the whole of Europe something like 9 million people were put to death on the charge of Witchcraft.
It's the greatest story of a holocaust never told.

However, I think only a small percentage of that number were actually real Witches.

Europe was in a state of frenzy at the time (especially on the continent) and sometimes just being very old or 'not all there' was enough to get you strapped to a burning pole.

That's why there's more pagan heritage availiable in Britian more than any other european country.
Thanks to us being physically seperate from europe and also thanks to Henry VIII for kicking out all the catholics, we were spared a lot of the horrors that took hold across the channel.

I'm sure if we had remained a catholic country places like Stonehenge and Avebury would have been destroyed long ago.

France is full of ancient sites, and I have been fortunate enough to visit Brittany where there are some truly amazing prehistoric sites, so I don't think the Catholics are too big on destroying things like that.

I interestingly it was not just the witches who were sparred in England, but also the Templars,

We area giving and forgiving nation, and it would seem that we always have been when it comes to people who are being persecuted.

I worry when I look at some of the religious zealots in the United States.

You don't need too much imagination to see that it could get very nasty for those deemed to be pagan in the not too distant future.

Blaire and Bush prayed together.

Hello God is it OK if me and George kill lot's of people and pinch their oil?

Christians my a**e

the thing is just because people label themselves christian or any other form of religion or not does not make them any different to each other in any way...   basically we all have the same needs we may go about obtaining them differently but putting someone down for their beliefs happens everywhere... in every religion (from what I can see) and in every country I don't' think any one country is worse than another it is perhaps just reported differently

The comment about Catholics is just as bad as any other Holocaust in history ....   I know that I lost many relatives (in the past)  ....  separatist views in my mind aren't great no matter who is doing the big noting be you Church of England pagan or atheist .. but then who am I to judge
