Civil madnessCivil rights groups are outraged because criminals doing community service are being made to wear bright orange hi-vis vests with the words "community payback" written on the back.
Groups like Liberty are complaining it goes against their human rights and it may make them feel self-consious and ashamed.
It's a pity they didn't feel self-consious and ashamed when they beat the old lady over the head for her pension.

I wonder if a member of Liberty or the like would still feel the same if they got mugged or had their house broken into.

I cannot imagine that they haven't.
Perhaps Liberty is a bit like the unions.
A brilliant idea to defend peoples rights and then taken over by extreme thinkers.
We do need spokespeople on this level and it is such a shame that they discredit themselves with such stupidity.
Now as a bit of a conspiracy lover i could possibly think that they have been infiltrated by those who worry about us wanting freedom to be standard and not always fought for.

F**k the Hi-Res jackets, shot the gits instead!
It's cheaper and more eco-friendly, gun powder is less harmful to the environment then all the Carbon Dioxide they'd expell working hard for there country

For once I have to disagree with a hard-line argument here WK. Though I am in favour of the death penalty in such cases as murder, rape and peadophilia I wouldn't want to see it returned for so-called 'petty' crimes that usually lead to community service.
Managed properly, community service can actually be quite a useful tool in punishment of criminals.
I'm all for the hi-vis jacket scheme but I think it should be taken a step further, as these scumbags are working the public should be able to throw rotten fruit and hurl as much abuse at them as possible.
It just might make them think twice next time.

How long I wonder before Europe says that this will no longer be allowed?
I think perhaps humiliation is a stronger deterrent than being locked up for a while.
Some would boast about being in prison, but not too many would want to be seen by their peers on the roadside dressed in high vis picking up litter.
There will always be those of course who are just bad and nothing will ever change that.
They need to go away for ever.

I agree Dave.
But community service is all well and good as long as it is rigidly enforced. If people don't turn up for their community service and can't give a good reason for not attending then it should be straight inside instead, no messing about.
And I think the hi-vis jackets are an essential - as you say, a little humiliation goes a long way.

We seem to be slowly inching towards humiliation as a punishment because other forms of punishment don't seem to be working.
Prison sentences and the dreadful ASBO's have become something of a 'badge of honour' with the criminal underclass.
I agree, community service needs to be strictly enforced (and it should be very hard work) and some kind of humiliation against the criminal needs to take place.

If they want a badge of honour, maybe we should bring back public branding.

I still think if you kill them, it would serve a better purpose in the long run, saying some thing like "You wanna try this? this is want happens" we did it in the middle ages, why not now? it's basically the same era, other then no slaves, and everyones to "Ohhhh you can't do that!! human rights i tell you" but thats me.

The thing is Waff that under the present government the kind of people who end up doing community service can just as likely be somebody who parked their car in a wrong place as much as a hardened criminal.
Do we really want to start executing people for parking offences?

Besides, the judicial system still makes mistakes - sure it's getting better at convicting the right people but if you were convicted of something, got exectued for it and then it was discovered that maybe you weren't quite as guilty as they first thought... bit late for you then, isn't it?
Public branding on the other hand... nasty old business but if you're innocent then skin grafts are a wonderful thing.

These days convictions are very much clearer due to dna evidence. I would only support the death sentence in such irrefutable cases where dna evidence is 100% clear.

Like that case with Peter Tobin where he murdered that 15 year old lass and buried her in his back garden. They managed to pin him down for that one because his toddler son had chewed on the girl's purse before Tobin threw it away. They used the DNA they found on the purse to match it to Tobin's son and thus got the dad.
DNA's an incredible thing.

The main reason I support the return of the death sentence is because Brussels have said they would kick us out of the EU if we did.
So on that alone, BRING BACK HANGING NOW!!!
