advice needed- unrelated to paranormal

Hello, you wonderful people!
I was wondering if you can help me with some advice on a matter not related to this forum's theme. My dog back home is sick, she has ostheoarthritis and the like and she can hardly walk on her back feet. Do you know (the ones who live in London) of a shop that sells stuff for disabled dogs? Like harnesses, slings or those carts with wheels. I had a search on the internet and those things can be really expensive but I would like to have look at them first before I decide what to buy. I also wonder if I can find any veterinary pharmacies in London as I am looking to buy her some medication for her problem too. We had some really brilliant injections in Romania made of algae extract for human use and those really helped her but the bastards discontinued making them so now I am desperate. My dog is 17 now but I want her to live forever. And she's a real burden for my mother.
Here's some pics of her taken last time I was home:

Hi Diana, your dog is beautiful.

My advice would be to talk to a vet regarding all that you have mentioned... the harnsses and the medications... I'm sure they'll guide you in the right direction.  There is a vet just around the corner from me called 'The Village Vet'.  I know they have surgerys/shops in other locations.  Look them up on the net.  I'm in London so if thats where you are... brilliant.  Good Luck.  This is the link to the one near me.   http://www.villagevet.co.uk/content/maidavale/home/46
evergreen

oh hon so sad .. so much pain...  you can try mussel extract or fish oil .. it comes in powder for dogs you mix it in their food...  also take all wheat products out of her diet it often creates more inflammation

I'm in Australia so I have no idea about where to get those gig's Mark is good with animals he may be able to assist :)

Diana

Thank both of you so much!
Jacky, are there veterinary pharmacies in London??? I will finally give it a try going to a vet after all. I go home in December and I need to solve this by then.
Evergreen- so the fish oil explains the fish and algae extract that did her so good when I had those injections. She could walk then. Trouble with her is she hates pills and it's really a long process of tricking her with hiding pills in food but she has such a great smell sense that she spots everything an then she refuses to eat. Injections are the best for her.:)
Diana

Thanks Mark!!!!!
well, my mother is good at making things and has a sewing machine but I think she just gave up cause she lives on the 3rd floor and carrying the dog up and down stairs is no longer fun!
evergreen

I've seen dogs nearly like new with eating the powder....

good luck Diana

Hi Diana, I would've thought that a vets surgery is also a pharmacy (for animals of course )... As surgeries do operations, I assume that they would have medications available too.  Try calling them up hun, they can tell you much more than myself.  I know the place on the link has been very good to my cat and they also helped my hamster not so long ago too. The phone number is on the link. Good luck hun.
Diana

Yes, Jackie, in Romania we have vet surgeries and also separate vet pharmacies although some are in the vets headquarters as well, so you can go and buy whatever you need.

my  boxer dog had similar  probs the harness wasnt much help '

That would be much appreciated too!

Well, my advice isn't going to be very popular but I suggest having it put to sleep.

I think it's incredibly cruel to keep an animal alive when it's in pain or too old to do the things it should be doing just for the selfishness of the owner. It's bad enough we allow people to stay alive when they are suffering but animals don't have to.

17 is a good age. Be thankful you had it that long.

I know it's not an easy choice to make but as soon as my dog was diagnosed with artheritis I had her put to sleep. They wanted to do all sorts of tests and things but I said no, I didn't want her going through all that.
Diana

You are right, Raymond, your advice is not popular. And I am surprised that you of all people should say that.As you wouldn't put your mother or your child to sleep I also don't believe in putting pets to sleep- that's killing in my book. She doesn't seem unhappy at all, the wags her tail all the time and has a bright look, begs at lunch and dinner for food and seems very much present, the only thing is she cannot walk anymore- not that much. So I will do anything I can to improve that. Equally as we do with our human loved ones.

Excuse me?

I most certainly would if they had an incurable disease and it saved them from suffering, and I would expect them to do the same for me. In fact, I've told them to.

That's another thing. My dog never asked me that. Big Grin
Raymond

Now you're being silly.

When my dog could no longer run around and enjoy herself she used to look at me with "Are you really going to put me through this again?" in her eyes every time I took her out.

When people keep old or sick animals alive it's nothing but cruelty and selfishness.
swanlady

I loved my Boxer dog Zoe.
When my dad died, I had her live with me as well as dads Parrot.
The parrot is still live and well living with my brother Lyndon.

Zoe had cancer and we had the choice to either have her put to sleep or continue with making her as comfortable as possible as long as possible.
We paid a private vet to come out that evening and she was put to sleep in my arms.

My love for her was such that I could,nt bear to see her suffer, not even for one more day to keep her with me.
evergreen

its a very personal choice...  I have lots of people ask for my "guidance" on this matter because they want their pet to life forever...  we all know they can't and wont but they do come through in session to let the owners know they are around them ..

when my animals have died only one I had to put to sleep the others all made the decision for me..and the shock was terrible ... the one I put to sleep I knew I had to all were very sad but with her in so many ways I felt she was avoiding anymore suffering ...
mark

i had to make a decision with amber  recently ,her back legs went she couldnt use them
we are only human and do our best
the love we feel is unexplainable
we cant really choose whats best at times
we are human ,i was blessed ,i believe my guides were there for me when amber was put down i saw many colours and human shapes form in front of me ,the atmosphere  changed  and i feel i was  so lucky to get assistance for me and the vet was wonderfull helping  me
ill never forget  chat here with dave and raymond ,i asked  for there help
about amber ,and what was happening ,ill always be thankfull for there kind words
dianne i will send you healing ,and for your beautifull dog ,i hope you do whats best either way ,and i really hope you get the assistance  i was privaleged to get ,where i was not alone ,ill always remember the love i have been shown  and given ,when the going for me gets really tough ,i get support ,how wonderfull is that
maybee you can ask for assistance too when the time comes
Scott

raymond what your saying is right but diana is obviously upset at this. there is a thing called compasion.
Raymond

Don't talk to me about compassion when an animal is obviously suffering and obviously not enjoying it's life and is being kept that way because the owner won't do the right thing.  Compassion?  HA!
Scott

you know what i mean
Raymond

No I don't actually. Seems a very simple choice to me.
mark

how are things  going  dianne
Scott

yes i'd like to know how things are going with this too diana
Raymond

I think she went off in a bit of a huff when I told her to kill her dog.

Well, Dendrina is happy to go out and happy to walk in the sun, today my mother told me she walked for longer time than yesterday, so I guess it depends on how she feels although I think it also depends on my mother's patience. As I am not with her I don't know. I go home in December and plan to spend all my time with her, I will walk her and make sure she's getting all the medication and powders and whatever attention she needs. My dog will not be put to sleep and I am adamant about it no matter how many preaches about 'humanity' I hear. None of my pets will ever be put to sleep!
Dendrina was a stray dog, she lived in the street for almost 2 years when I took her in. She was pretty adamant about wanting me as a owner as well and determined to live and have a good life. She had the best life, she even lived with me in Holland when I lived there, she would be here in London with me if it weren't for that bloody animals quarantine law this country has. She was and is loved and will have the best of care.
I am a survivor and so is she.
As about pets with paralysed legs... I know someone whose cat fell from the 1st floor and broke its back, got back legs paralysed, was incontinent and the owner kept him alive with diapers. I remember him happily running around in his diapers only on his front 2 feet. I think they enjoy being in this world just as much as we do. They're not brain damaged and for sure they know what happens to them.
Once Dendrina got poisoned and she had bad neurological reactions. The first thing she's always done when she is sick she jumps in bed with us and asks for help. She doesn't ask for being killed. She asks for help.
I believe killing your pet is more a proof of selfishness- caring for them is a burden, costs money and so on so we invented this 'humane' excuse. I think that's crap!!!!
Everyone can do whatever they please with their family, kids and pets.
All I know is that mine will not be killed.
And I cannot wait to see her again. She's a sweet dog with a lot of personality, who never listens to anything and does as she pleases. I built that spirit , love it and want to see some more of it.

Oh and I wans't being touchy, Raymond, I just stopped reading the thread as I already knew the way it would go.  Big Grin  And my decision was made about these things a long time ago.
Anyway, I am used going against the tide. :)
Thanks everyone for the CONSTRUCTIVE  advice and I will follow them.

Damn right Swanny!

This 'bloody' country hasn't had one case of rabies for a very long time. Let's keep it that way.
david hobbs

This is a tricky thing because I don't think that anyone would want to have a pet put down.

Is it cruel not to put a pet down if it is in serious pain and has no quality of life.  I think it is.

Is it wrong to put a pet down if it is crippled but still seems to be having a life?  Well to me, yes it is and as Diana said,it is ridding ourself of a burden, the easy lazy option.

I like to think that if my cat was old but having a reasonable life there is no way that I would have her removed like a bag off rubbish just because it is not convenient to me.

They say that you judge a nation by the wat it treats it's pets and as far as I am concerned that goes for people too.

You do not kill something you love not even to be kind.

I am sure that if Diana really thought that her pet was in constant agony and nothing could be done then perhaps it might be different but it is not the case.  Keep it happy as long as you can Diana.

PS  I wonder if those in favour of killing old pets have ever had to do it themselves.
Raymond

david hobbs wrote:

Yes, often.

We're in the process of making this decision about my Mum and Dad's dog at the moment.

He's a 19 year old black Labrador and the quality of life is practically nil. He can barely eat never mind walk. He has virtually no control over his bodily functions and just sits staring at the wall for hours on end.

I don't know if there's a doggy version of senile dementia but he often doesn't recognise any of us and has even growled at us from time to time because he doesn't know who we are.

Of course none of us want him to die, he's been part of our family for the best part of 20 years, but is it right to allow an animal to live like this? Of course not.

But you're saying it's the humane thing to keep him alive. That to put him to sleep is the 'easy option'. You really are talking out your arse now Hobbs.

Like I said before, it's nothing but a scandal that we allow people to live like this. Animals don't have to.
david hobbs

Actually I meant it literaly.

I mean killing it yourself not having a nice man in a white coat do it for you.

Yes I did when I was 17 and our Boxer dog named Buster was at the end of his long and very much loved life.
My dad and brothers could,nt have him put to sleep. But he could,nt get up to go to the toilet, could,nt do anything at all except lie there and be stroked.
So I, knowing that paracetemol causes heart attacks in animals crushed up 10 tablets and disolved them in a nice warm cup of tea which Buster loved and he died five minutes after drinking it.

So yes I did kill a pet to save him from more suffering. I,m not proud of what I did, but I did stop him from more suffering I hope.

Well done Swanny that was kind and brave and of course a horrible experience for you.

I would never go to someone elses country and complain about their laws. .

I find this reasoning a bit silly. I will always put down any laws that I don't like regardless of the country. I believe in the freedom of having my own opinion and speaking it. And maybe you should learn not to take so personally things that are not personal. It would save you a lot of heartache, because I bet this 'my country's laws are sacred' stuff is not the only one you take personally in life.
If people were more relaxed, world would be a better place.
No contry's laws are sacred and I personally don't believe in any rules that don't serve my best interest and at the moment my best interest is to be able to travel freely with as many pets I want. Yes, I know I am selfish and so on.

If I had to of course I would. Wouldn't you? Wimp?

That's the test for me.

Same as eating meat.

If you wouldn't kill it don't eat it.

I said ANY countries laws are there for a reason.

I wonder what the reason behind THESE rules is:

- Alabama:
1. It is illegal for a driver to be blindfolded while operating a vehicle.

- Alaska:
1. It is illegal to push a live moose out of a moving airplane.

- California:
1. Community leaders passed an ordinance that makes it illegal for anyone to try and stop a child from playfully jumping over puddles of water.

- Connecticut:
1. You can be stopped by the police for biking over 65 miles per hour.
2. You are not allowed to walk across a street on your hands.

- Florida:
1. Women may be fined for falling asleep under a hair dryer, as can the salon owner.
2. A special law prohibits unmarried women from parachuting on Sunday or she shall risk arrest, fine, and/or jailing.
3. If an elephant is left tied to a parking meter, the parking fee has to be paid just as it would for a vehicle.
4. It is illegal to sing in a public place while attired in a swimsuit.
5. Men may not be seen publicly in any kind of strapless gown.
6. Any form of sexual contact other than missionary position is a misdomeanor. (This is still a law. There have been several cases of people being brought up on these charges in the past 5 years alone. If the police enter a home with a warrent for some other crime and catch the 'culprits' in action, they can, and are, brought up on those charges.)

- Illinois:
1. It is illegal for anyone to give lighted cigars to dogs, cats, and other domesticated animal kept as pets.

and so on... Big Grin
swanlady

your like a dog with a bone.

What is your problem with me Diane?

Lets just agree to disagree.
Raymond

I wouldn't take it personally Swanny. I think Diana just likes to win an argument.
Nothing wrong with that - I'm like that too.
All you can do with people like us is either ignore us or come back with an argument they couldn't possibly respond to.
Agreeing to disagree is never an option for people like me and Diana, isn't that right Diana? Big Grin
Diana

Right, Raymond! Big Grin  For we are always right! Big Grin
Raymond

No. I'm always right.

And there was nothing personal as it was about something as abstract as a law.

Yes there are some very daft laws around, I agree, and Britain has more daft laws than most places because we still have laws that were made hundreds of years ago that nobody's bothered to overturn.

However, the quarantine laws are good laws because, like I said, Britain has been free of Rabies for a long time now and in the interest of all people and animals it's important we keep it that way.
Diana

Anyways, this thread has served its purpose, I have my answers and it looks like now it's going into the bushes. lol.
I am off to Camden now for some magic ingredients. Gonna be busy tonight so you better behave or I'll wave my magic wand. lol
Raymond

Let's us know what you buy.

Well, may countries are free of rabies- even Romania, and we don't have laws like that.
Bye byeeeee for now!!!! Camden Town awaits:))))

who are you arguing with, Raymond???

Been to Camden and bought gemstones, and on my way there stopped at Superdrug and bought this for my dog:

She had something with similar composition but ampoules for injections that they don't make anymore (which was http://www.drugs-pro.com/inflamation/alflutop.html )and she felt great. Now it seems these tablets I bought have similar composition so I just sent part of them home to my mother. I am glad.
