Addictive madness

An outbreak of mass-hysteria has broken out in three seperate communities in Nicaragua.
So far, 46 people have fallen victim to what locals call "crazy sickness" - known medically as mass psychogenic disorder.
Symptoms are similar to that of an anxiety attack.
In some of the cases people appear to be in 'dazed trance'.
No one knows what causes it but research suggests it has been occurring for centuries.

That's the first thing that occurred to me, too.  It looks like something in their diet.

I remember seeing a documentary about the first settlers in Jamestown in the US in the 17th century.  They had a severe food shortage, and there was a serious epidemic which killed most of them, and sent others mad, so that they attacked each other.  Scientists came up with the theory that they had eaten wheat which was infected with ergot, a deadly fungus which causes hallucinations and then death,  and that the murders and attacks were due to these hallucinogenic effects of the ergot.

Makes you wonder if it's something similar in this case, doesn't it?
