12 year old has sex swap

I've just broken my own 'news-ban' rules to read this:

A 12-year-old boy reported to have changed sex faces "a critical moment" in his life, a transgender campaign group has said.

Bernard Reed, a trustee of the Gender Identity Research and Education Society (GIRES), said teachers and pupils at the child's secondary school in southern England were key to his future.

The child's parents gave him a girl's name by deed poll and allowed him to wear a dress to school, according to The Sun.

The paper said teachers at the school, which has not been identified, called an emergency assembly to explain to pupils the boy would now be treated as a girl.

Mr Reed said it was likely the child had been confused about their gender for years.
He said: "As many as 500,000 people in the UK experience this, but very few of them seek treatment or change gender. Very young children can realise there is something wrong that perhaps they can not understand and as they get older they can face more repressive forces. Their family may struggle with the issue and they may be bullied at school.

"There is a small number that get the right support from their family and school so they can live as themselves. The start of puberty is a critical moment in their lives. What happens in other countries is the child is given treatment for the suspension of the pubertal process but this is refused in the UK."

Children in this country can have hormone treatment to aid their physical development but this does not usually happen until they are at least 16 and surgery is not allowed until the age of 18 apart from in exceptional cases.

Mr Reed said: "The key people in this are the teachers. They need coaching so they are confident about talking to the other children and their parents. The other key people are the peer group, the children who will be around the child."

It was reported the child's parents hoped his transformation from male to female would not be noticed as he was starting secondary school this year, but pupils from his old primary school noticed the change.

I'm all for sexual freedom but this is horrendous. How can a 12 year old possibly make a decision like that?

Do they really think he's not going to get a shed load of crap from his schoolmates over this?

I'd love to meet him for a child to take this step he must be incredible belief in himself ..  most kids would want to hid in the closet until they were confident enough to step outside and be seen....

I'm not at all sure the right thing has been done it seems way too young for me but god lord that kid has guts
Waffle King

Has plenty of guts, but still, his Prom nights gunna be a challange

And what about the parents in all of this?

I can just imagine how the conversation would have gone if I had said to my Mum and Dad at age 12 that I wanted a sex change.

I guess they listened to their child and watch him and thought this was the best decision.. I can understand the idea of putting off puberty- that isn't' a bad thing ...   just this week I had a client who has changes gender from one to the other then back again.... that would be my biggest concern you have no idea at 12 that this is what you will want forever.. even if you think it very strongly is
Raymond

Most 12 year olds I know can't even decide what they want for breakfast never mind what business they want going on between their legs.

I can just imagine what these parents are like to openly support such a thing.

I bet they read The Guardian and vote Liberal Democrat.

In my honest opinion, I knew I was gay at 12...I knew I was different and was scared, needless to say I didn't come out til a few years later.  While I don't doubt that he may know what he likes...I'd have to say, he IS only 12 and to make such a decision without fully thinking about something that will change you completely...he may end up regretting the decision later in his/her life.
evergreen

yeah I know people who are obviously out and gay at 12 but this is a far bigger step isn't it
Raymond

Knowing you're gay is different to this. I knew I was gay as soon as I knew what sex was.

I just find this whole thing wrong on every level. The bullying and teasing he will get will destroy him.
ShadowPhoenix

You have a valid point there, Ray.  Children are very evil (don't believe me? Watch "Children of the Corn" tee hee) and he more than likely will be teased for much, if not all, his childhood and adolescent years.
Raymond

He'll be teased for the rest of his life. There is still much chatter on facebook about how I wet myself at school when I was 8.
ShadowPhoenix

Oh...well hrm...I always had a reputation and was never teased, I mean people would talk when I left the room or whisper in extremely hushed tones, but they (thankfully) knew better than to say anything to my face.

Oh this is so good to have another rainbow person on here at long last!

I was drowning in a sea of beige before you came along SP!
