The Green Man pub lies at Bradwell on Sea on the eastern side of Essex and is on the banks of the River Blackwater. The river was given it's name during the time of the Black Death and the victims bodies would be disposed of in the river. It is about as isolated as any pub that you could find and an area that things do seem to pass by. Anne ,Ian, Stan, and myself arrived around 9.30 pm. The first thing that I saw was a man sitting outside of the pub wearing a very elaborate ghost mask. I had that feeling that you sometimes get when investigating pubs that we could be in for a bit of mickey taking. As it turned out their was none of that at all.

click me

The pub dates back to the sixteenth century and has a history of smuggling and skulldugary. I noted that fish night was Thursday and wondered why we had chosen a Sunday to visit.

The first thing that I picked up was singing and piano music. As the scene became clearer I could see hundreds of people in military uniform and It was obviously wartime. The atmosphere was every bit as lively as you see in the old black and white wartime films showing soldiers about to go to war and possibly not be coming home. I was a little bit puzzled by this but I have learned over the years to trust my instincts. We had a local historian with us and he told me that just along the road was an old wartime airbase and that during the was this was their local pub. Up stairs used to be a dance hall and the place was one big party for the airmen most nights. I was happy that I had picked up the information if not a little surprised. I also described a bomb to the historian and said that I felt that it was not an ordinary bomb but one specifically for use over the sea and that it was tested out over the local estuary. Again he confirmed my intuitive findings.
The last thing that I picked up on was a love affair between a rather sophisticated lady and what I took to be an American airman. The airbase was British but I just felt a very strong American connection. I could feel the romance between this woman who was not young but probably thirtyish. I saw that this affair would the talk of the village and a very high profile thing bot I had no reason why it would be so. Again local history was at hand in the shape of the historian and two of the bar staff. Apparently a local lady widow had fallen in love with a German man who was then transported to America. He returned to England to find his woman again but never stopped talking about America and how they must go and live there. I was told that the woman had died recently and was in her eighties. You can imagine the stir that marrying a German just after the war would have caused withing this little tight =knit community. All In all a rewarding evening and if you are down that way pop in and the Chief Michael will cook you an excellent meal and you will know little of the history of the place.

The Green Man, In one of the rooms I could sense bodies under the floor [quite a few] I dont know what century I was seeing but the bodies appeared bloated and mutilated. Dave and Stan seemed to think they were probably plaque victims. However I must disagree with them both on the fact that the bodies would NOT have been thrown into the sea. More likely put into a pit with quick lime. Venturing down into the cellar I felt as though I wanted to walk through the wall. I was told by the Landlord that through that very wall would be where I had sensed the bodies. In fact 2 small holes had been drilled into the wall and it appears that behind the wall is a large void. I was accompanied by a spirit police constable wherever I ventured in the pub. I know his name and number which I could see on his collar, he was from the 1900 to 1910 period. I have tried to verify this, but have had no luck through the internett, so my next quest is to go back to Bradwell and look amongst the grave stones in the Church yard. If anyone has any 1900 conections with the police force or know who I can ask, please let me know as his spirit was very strong. Upstairs in one of the rooms, now used as a store room I could see a young girl of about 9, 10 years old lying on a bed beneath the window. I seemed to know that she was suffering from polio, so probably the 1950s. I felt she was quite a mischevious spirit, which was verified by one of the young ladies of the pub, who said she often found opened packets of crisps lying on the floor near to the window. A great evening made even more so as we saw the shower of shooting stars and meteorites when we eventually left the pub well after midnight.

What can i say about the green man that the other team members have not already said. As i was behind the camera for the whole evening, i did not really get in tune with the place, but the inn certainly had a lot of history attached to it and had many residual images of people who frequented the property when they were alive.
Stan, dave and Anne came up with a lot of information of which some was verified by the local historian and bar staff, some of which we are trying to verify ourselves. All in all a pleasent evening. When i have finished putting the footage together i will post the link for you all to see, hopefully withinh the next few days time permiting and the wife letting me get hold of the computer for a minute.

If you take a look at out main web site, i will be selling some dvd's of various locations at a reasonable £4.99 including postage, should anyone want a better copy than u-tube/Google
Most of them will be full length and un edited.

ian
