I have been watching around the world in 80 faiths.

One of the faiths was Spiritualism.

it was the usual table tipping and trumpet job.

Now believe it or believe it not I do have a lot of time for Spiritualism especially the teaching techniques which I found unequalled as far as meditation and sensitivity enhancement and dicipline is concerned.

Why do they always portray Spiritualism as a table tipping, overweight mediums style of religion.

I never ever found it to be so.

None of the closed circles I sat in ever did table tipping.

It's what the public want to see.

I was asked by Channel 4 some years ago to do an interview for a religious show they were doing. They wanted to do a section on Witchcraft. I agreed.

So they turned up, I had scrubed the house from top to toe and made myself presentable and wore a shirt and tie for the occasion.

This wasn't good enough for them. They bought a load of green lights and a fog machine into my livingroom - as if I live in green light and fog!

Then they wanted to finish the interview at the local cemetary in a kind of 'Blair Witch Project' style, - as if I hang about in graveyards!

So I told them all to piss off, the interview was over.

I imagine some bloke in a tie sitting in his living room talking about his Witchcraft antics isn't 'sexed up' enough.

I thought you always had green lights and a fog machine running...

My Grandmother often talked about the times when she went to a trumpet and how it would be in a cabinet that it would fly out of.  Now, I know what you're thinking but hey folks she was there when it was placed in and examined it for any trickery that was why she was there.  It flew out at her most of the time.  I would have loved to have seen but hey even Mom was not thought of yet.  LOL.

I wonder who first thought of the idea of using trumpets in the séance room.

Spiritualism began in America I believe with the Fox sisters.  Did they come up with the idea.

I don't really know how much of this history is documented but it would be interesting to find out a bit more.

A lot of people have the idea that the Victorians invented Spiritualism, but I can't imagine there were no seances before the 19th century... or were there?

Sorry Lilly but you'd be the odd one out. If you catch my meaning.

But I always need someone to make the tea afterwards.

In reality weren't the Victorians just following a path that mankind has followed for tens of thousands of years?

Cultures all over the world have communed with ancestors and spirits for ever and ever.

Put a Christian slant to all of that and bring it into the present day and bingo, you have Spiritualism.
Nothing new.  Just a new name and slightly different rules to fit in with modern day beliefs.
