Have I never spoke of Shirley before? I'm sure I have.

Her full name is Dame Shirley Bassey, and she's such a diva! She certainly lives up to her namesake.

Great story.  I know some folks in the US who are all JW's.  The Bible is a very large part of their life, amazing you got them looking at another book.

JW's aren't evil people, they just have different beliefs.

A friend of mines cousin (female) married a JW and she had to convert and all that to do so.   One day, both their kids were in a car accident and they needed a transfusion.  He was quite willing to let them die.  She gave the go ahead for the transfusion.  She had to leave the JW's and the husband hasn't spoken to her, nor the children (they are dead to him) ever since.

I'd have thought if you believe in God, then you believe God has given us the technology to save these lives.

Great story and one that illustrates the power of brain washing to a tee.

Then again perhaps some folks need to be told what to think and when to think it in order to feel comfortable in their lives.

Perhaps in years to come they will be blowing up trains and buses in order to create Gods kingdom here on Earth

its a sad thing to allow belief to inflict needless pain....  and where believe in something takes a higher stand than love and compassion...   and yet perhaps we are all guilty of thing in many forms afteral I don
t often believe you are right and I am wrong

What a story, Raymond!

Brainwashing is a terrible thing, isn't it?  Especially when it makes you go against all natural human instincts, especially a fundamental basic one like caring for and nurturing your own children.  Most parents would fight for their children with everything they had, every last ounce of strength.  I admit here without apology that I despise any religion or teaching that forces anyone to repudiate their nearest and dearest and just write them off to die, when the means of saving their lives is within one's grasp.
How convenient and yes, cowardly, to wash their hands of all responsibility and meekly trot out that it's god's will, and by so doing absolve themselves of the crime of murder by neglect.  I cannot begin to imagine the unbearable pain and anguish these cruel, heartless teachings and edicts must inflict on these poor, deluded people.  To me, it's cruelty and evil at its very worst, and I can't see any rhyme nor reason for it except lust for power and control.

I never thought I'd feel so sorry for any JWs, as I do for the small group you made friends with, Raymond.  Gods only know how much they were punished and made to suffer, just for momentarily relenting and behaving like normal human beings for a short while, instead of brainwashed drones.  It's just plain wrong to treat people like that.

Maybe Laura. I have to say though, none of the JW's I met seemed mad.

COC is mad.

That's fair enough, their ground, their rules.

Very brave and generous of you, Raymond, to let those people in your house and let them share their world with you. And also very patient of you, although I can see you had some fun while doing it too.  That's a clever move into making them see that you are a nice person and after that to get interested in your belief system. Brilliant! And you almost managed to convert them. I need to learn from that because it shows again how theory works in practice. It is the patience that I lack and I know I wouldn't have the generosity of offering them some of my time and the oportunity to share their world with me. I am simply not interested. I guess I need to learn how to be more open. Thanks for the story!

Well that's the thing.

You don't need to fully understand other people's points of view but have an interest in them.
I have quite an interest in religion generally and why people believe in the things they do and I've studied religion for years.
I have no interest in converting to other religions but I'm interested in learning about them.
Trouble is, it's difficult to talk to people of other religions without them trying to convert you or running down all the others.

We choose the religion or belief system which offers us more in terms of what we need as a person. It is fascinating to understand what others believe in and the motivation behind it because that's how you understand theyr values and what makes them tick. :)

I have to say though, I'm always more interested in talking ot people who have chosen thier religion for themselves. That's where you really find the motivation.
People who have just accepted their religion of birth out of brainwashing or fear hold very little interest for me.

I agree, forgot to mention the brainwashing part. But even they can be a challenge for they accepted brainwashing for a reason. Not all of us are so easily led by the nose:)
